Hi,
To bid for the freelancers is little tricky job as their are so many people doing the same for the project.. The rate for the project should be such that it gives profit to you and also complete satisfaction to the client so that he can approach you again for the work..

I prefer hourly rates than project, well a freelancer can have a higher price rate because of the credibility of his / her job.

I also charge sponsors to place adds on my blog, but I have never charged to write (with my broken English, nobody would ever pay. LOL). I came to this rate when I decided to reduce my working hours to spend more time with the kids. I just contacted all my clients and was transparent about it. thanks..

This post was very inciteful as I have been complating doing some freelance work recently. Most of the points you mentioned had crossed my mind, but not in the detail and clarity you have provided. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for breaking all this down for me. It seems pidly to work for $25 an hour as a tutor (I'm a certified teacher), and that's what I thought of when you mentioned per hour. Your rates make me want 18 yrs of experience and endless freelance jobs! ;)

This is excellent Kelby. Thank you for sharing and for starting this conversation about "bloggers should get pay". I've been saying that since I got into social media with my own company.
To share my rates, I charge $300/hr for consultancy projects. This often includes application development and high level strategy implementations. I also charge sponsors to place adds on my blog, but I have never charged to write (with my broken English, nobody would ever pay. LOL). I came to this rate when I decided to reduce my working hours to spend more time with the kids. I just contacted all my clients and was transparent about it. It was scary but enough of them hired me back. This was the best thing I ever did for myself and my family.
Ah, one more thing: I always charge a retainer of at least 3 months (for long-term projects) or 50% upfront.
Bottom line, you just need to have the courage to ask and the confidence to know how much you are worth. I don't think moms really understand how much value they have to offer.
