For close to two decades, I have been a web geeky chick. Two years ago, I finally shed my Kelby 1.0 print skin and evolved into Kelby 2.0. (Or was that just a scene in some demented cyberpunk book? Who knows.) Anyway, here is my 2.0 version of the resume.
Here are sites that I own, operate, publish and have built from scratch. That means I did the web development, tweaks of design templates, site organization, planning, some of the writing, marketing, you name it.
This is a social network and multi-author blog. What makes Type-A Mom unique is that the moms don’t just network here, but the advice here comes directly from real moms. With a revenue share setup, Type-A Mom is like a mom coop. All moms who write for Type-A Mom earn a 50-50 revenue share. The site features about 30 mom editors with various areas of expertise. Moms can also connect with various mom friends, and link to their web sites, blogs and social networking pages on their profiles.
This is a social network just for dads. It is set up in a very similar manner to Type-A Mom, but it is one of the first social networks devoted just to dads. Here dads can promote themselves and their various web sites and social networking profiles in one spot. They can also earn revenue for sharing advice with other dads. They can find fellow dad friends, and the site features dad editors on subjects ranging from adoption to dad blogging. I created and designed the site, and I am the co-publisher with my husband,
Michael Carr.
This is a social network devoted entirely to foodie moms. On this site, foodie moms can connect with other foodie moms, share recipes, share tips and, best of all, earn revenue for contributing user-generated content. The site features foodie mom editors covering everything from feeding babies to local food to canning and preserving. I created this site because I am passionate about food, but it is challenging for moms to feed their families well with the demands of momhood. The childhood obesity epidemic is also a major concern, but moms can learn about healthy, local, handmade and organic foods.
At momShare, you can find the news that is submitted, picked and voted by moms. A type of Digg for moms, I created momShare (based on the open source Pligg system) as a place for moms to get promotion and stand out from the cacophony on the current popular social bookmarking sites. Not only can moms submit, comment and vote on the best of the web for moms, but if they submit an item they will earn ad revenue share that the submission page earns. At momShare, the news topics are focused on moms, including working at home and parenting toddlers.
I have been the guide for the France Travel site for About.com, a New York Times company, since 2002. On this site, I have honed a variety of skills ranging from writing for the web, search engine optimization or SEO, travel writing, and web promotion. Over those years, I have grown the traffic on my About site from the tens of thousands monthly to hundreds of thousands monthly and to a PageRank 7 site. My About site features a wide range of online content, from destination features and maps to photo galleries and language tips. I have been blogging on About since well before “blog” was a household term.
I was formerly the online content editor for the Asheville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. During my time there, I optimized the site for search engines, created dozens of new pages, and managed this extensive site of 1,600-plus pages. My work resulted in dramatic traffic growth in a time when tourism sites are seeing a downturn. After deciding to work from home, I continue to do various work for the CVB as a web consultant, including personally redesigning their partner site,
Asheville CVB.com, and launching micro-sites such as
Foodtopian Society.com and
Cool Asheville Savings.com. I also continue to write their e-newsletter, which has seen major growth in double opt-ins and click-through rates.
For nearly two years, I have served as the Family Adventures feature writer for Suite 101. Suite 101 is an online magazine that attracts millions of page views monthly. When I took over Family Adventures, the section wasn’t appearing in Google. Today, it receives thousands of page views monthly, thousands of Google referrals monthly, and it is now a PageRank 5 section of Suite101. On Suite 101, I have written a wide variety of search-engine optimized articles on a wide variety of family travel and adventure topics ranging from flying with babies to camping recipes.
